Who is OME

Kolby Danner

Kolby is a Course 2-A/6 Major, Mechanical Engineering with Control, Instrumentation, and Robotics Track, Class of '18.

Tell me about your first encounter with MIT’s OME Office?

I first encountered the OME during the summer of 2014 while participating in Interphase EDGE. This was a great experience overall and it established my connection to the OME Office.

What were your initial impressions?

I thought that the OME staff was down to earth and pretty easy to get along with. Also they were always willing to give me food, so that’s a huge plus.

Did those impressions change over time?

My initial impressions were reinforced over time. In the past year I have opened up more to OME staff and now I may find myself talking to them about sports or sharing some laughs; and when it comes to the free food, let’s just say my freshman fifteen was expedited by the OME.

What programs did you take part in, and how were they helpful?

I participated in Interphase EDGE (IP14!) as well as Seminar XL, both of which contributed to my survival throughout my first year at MIT. As a member of IP14 I took classes over the summer that solidified my understanding of GIR subjects and introduced problem solving techniques. Seminar XL provided an extra three hours per week of review and problem solving which helped me knock out my Chemistry GIR.

What was your most memorable or valuable experience with OME?

I know I have mentioned it a few times already, but I cannot express enough how valuable an experience Interphase EDGE was to me. It conditioned me to the fast-paced and quite demanding life of a typical MIT student; I would have been overwhelmed had I come here as the student I was in high school. Another thing I took away from IP14 was a great group of friends who I have become close to over the past year. As someone who is not great at meeting new people, I probably would have gone through freshman year pretty much alone had I not participated in IP14.

If you had to describe OME with one word, what would it be?

What would you want others to know about OME?

OME is hOME, and the OME family has its arms open to just about anyone who wants to become part of the family.

What are the OME’s best features/resources?

In my opinion, the best resources of the OME are its people. From the staff to the students, the OME is a community of brilliant people with varying backgrounds and interests. One of the best decisions I have made at MIT is deciding to join this community.

If you had to pick one book or comic to take with you to a deserted island, what would it be?

Any book from the Twilight saga. Not because I like them—I just know that I might need something to use to keep warm at night.
