Carla Pinzón - Global Initiative and/or Experience
Her nominator writes:
Carla has taken every opportunity to participate in global experiences at MIT and has involved herself immensely in the MIT community. The summer after freshman year, she participated in the Singapore-MIT Undergraduate Research Fellowship, where she worked in the Center for Environmental Sensing and Modeling. For her project, Carla designed systems for controlling propulsion capabilities in bio-inspired, underwater soft robots and developed mechanisms to change fin geometry and material properties in the robot for the inspection of the Singapore harbor. Because of this project, Carla discovered her love for robotics and realized she wanted to go to graduate school to obtain a Ph.D. in robotics. The summer revolutionized Carla’s life, not only because of the challenging research, but also because of the opportunities to travel and to experience the diversity of culture in Southeast Asia. Singapore, with its central location in Southeast Asia, allowed Carla to travel inexpensively to many different countries: Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, and Cambodia, where she experienced the most beautiful of cultures. Carla has taken many initiatives to involve herself within different communities at MIT. She is an active member of her dorm, Senior House, and her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. She is the Co-Marketing Director of the Undergraduate Energy Club and joined the MIT Gymnastics Team this semester. In her free time, she participates in Model UN and works on the control systems for a soft robotic fish for her Undergraduate Research Opportunity (UROP) in the Comptuer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL).
