Her nominator writes:
Estefania Avila is one of the most inspirational people I know at MIT. I don’t understand how she does it, but she is extremely involved in and out of campus. She excels in her classes and has multiple jobs, some of which involve working with kids and outreach programs. All the work and projects she does are very representative of how much she values her community.
As a freshman, Estefania was quick to find herself on the executive board of LUChA, La Unión Chicana por Azátlan. LUChA is an organization that provides cultural and academic support to students who identify in any way with Latino culture. She went on to eventually become President of the organization and led a strong board through a very prosperous semester that saw an increase in participation of various events and an excellent execution of a mentorship program for underclassmen.
This past year, she was the Director of Publicity for the Latino Cultural Center (LCC), which unifies six Latino organizations on campus to promote Latino culture and provides students with a strong sense of community within the institute. Her creativity and innovation has seen its way all over the infinite, in every dorm on campus, in students’ inboxes, and in everyone’s newsfeed. Her advertising campaign has not only increased the LCC’s presence on campus, but it has also increased attendance for various events, such as bringing in over 300 students, families, staff and faculty to Cena a las Seis during Family Weekend in October. She has also worked closely with the other publicity chairs of the Latino Leaders Assembly, helping them improve their own methods of advertising.
Estefania’s passion leaves a lasting impact on each and every person and organization she works with. She truly helps the Latino Cultural Center provide that strong and supportive environment for Latino students to excel at MIT.
