Who is OME

Faben Girma

Class of '17, Faben is a Course 10, Chemical Engineering, major.

Tell me about your first encounter with MIT’s OME Office?

My first encounter with the OME was during Interphase EDGE. Over the course of the summer, I got to know the staff pretty well.

What were your initial impressions?

My first impression of the OME was that everybody was extremely friendly and willing to help! I was surprised when members of the OME addressed me by my fist name during the first week of Interphase especially because my name is not very common.

Did those impressions change over time?
Absolutely not! The more I got to know the OME, the more comfortable I felt. I could go to the OME office whether I was having a stressful week or an exciting one. Someone is always willing to listen!

What programs did you take part in, and how were they helpful?
Over the course of the past two years, I have participated in Interphase EDGE, Momentum, and Seminar XL. Coming into MIT, I had doubts about my academic preparedness. Interphase helped me prepare for my freshman year at MIT, both academically and emotionally. Seminar XL supplemented my knowledge or 18.02A and gave me extra practice. Momentum was the first time I was exposed to robotics, a field I may have never ventured into otherwise and really enjoyed my experience.\

What was your most memorable or valuable experience with OME?
Each program I have done with the OME has been valuable on its own, but the most memorable is the summer I spent as a part of Interphase. Deciding to give up my last summer at home and start school early felt like a huge sacrifice at the time. However, my Interphase summer was by far the greatest summer I had had up to that point in my life. It was an intense, but rewarding experience. Through late night pset parties and weekends exploring Boston, I formed great friendships.

If you had to describe OME with one word, what would it be?
Family! The OME is just one big family!

What would you want others to know about OME?
If you need help, but don’t know where to go, speak to someone in the OME! Even if they don’t have a solution to your problem, they will get you in contact with someone who does or at least point you in the right direction.

What are the OME’s best features/resources?
The OME’s best features are the staff. They care about the experience of each and every student and go above and beyond to ensure that each student has a positive experience. Another great feature of the OME is the networking opportunities they provide students. They provide a platform where students can interact with company representatives through out the year. Many of my friends were able to obtain internship because of the OME.
