Job Description

The Interphase EDGE/x Residential Facilitator (RFA) is a 9-week teaching position during the summer, responsible for guiding first-year MIT students through weekly recitations, office hours, and one-on-one meetings. RFAs provide academic support, including reviewing class materials, problem-solving, and assisting with non-academic workshops. This full-time role takes precedence over concurrent participation in flexible UROPs. Some RFAs may work with both on-campus and online classes (IP and IPx).

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Administrative and Programmatic:

  • Attend all training sessions.
  • Mentor and support up to 70 on-campus and 20 online scholars.
  • Assist with student move-in at the beginning of the summer for both IP (June) and IP/x scholars (late July).
  • Aid students in moving out to fall dorms (early August) as needed.
  • Conduct a minimum of two office hours weekly.
  • Aid students in homework, projects, test preparation, and other academic tasks.
  • Teach academic improvement skills, including study strategies and note-taking.
  • Keep the OME Summer Leadership team informed of key incidents within 24 hours.

Residential:

  • Supervise students in various settings (dorms, events, etc.).
  • Lead a cluster of 8-12 students, fostering a safe and supportive environment.
  • Conduct daily informal check-ins with cluster students.
  • Plan and implement social, educational, and recreational activities.
  • Be present during scholars' dining hours.
  • Host group-bonding activities and assist with workshop setup and cleanup.

Academic:

  • Take attendance in classes, office hours, and study sessions.
  • Grade PSETS and exams.
  • Attend class lectures with students and track attendance.
  • Attend academic and residential staff meetings.
  • Enforce curfew and act as a residential advisor.
  • Provide positive and constructive feedback to students.

Qualifications

  • Completed specific class(es) with an "A" grade in subject(s) seeking to support.
  • Current MIT upper-division student.
  • Tutoring and/or mentoring experience preferred.
  • Understanding of academic concepts and the capacity to teach relevant skills to students.
  • Desire to work with students of diverse backgrounds is preferred.
  • Exhibit responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Maintain professional behavior at all times.

Additional IPx RFA Duties

  • Assist with MITx/Canvas maintenance for courses.
  • Provide support for Communications Capstone and Physics/Calculus take-home kit projects.
  • Host virtual and in-person activities.
  • Support programming as needed.

  • Compensation: 30 hrs/wk, $4,800 for the 8-week program and week-long training (9 weeks total).

  • Housing and some meals provided.
  • For RFAs working with both IP and IPx will be compensated an additional $1,000 (additional hours) for the 8-week program and week-long training (9 weeks total).
