Graduate ’12
Department
Chemical Engineering

Andrea graduated in June 2012 from the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Tell me about your first encounter with MIT’s OME Office?
It was during orientation. The OME had a dinner for students and parents, and I went with my mom. We met Elsie and Sandy, and my mom felt a lot better to know that she could communicate with somebody at MIT in case of an emergency.

What were your initial impressions?
All the people that introduced themselves from the OME were extremely friendly, willing to listen, and great at giving advice. My first impression was that they were like a big family.

Did those impressions change over time?
Just a little since people have been moving in and out of the office during the last three years. But it is impressive how welcoming the office is because all new staff members seem to fit perfectly and collaborate.

What programs did you take part in, and how were they helpful?
I was in Seminar XL during my first year. The magnitude of the help depends on the instructor’s knowledge and skills, and the student’s effort to learn and move forward. I remember having an awesome time on my 8.01 and 8.02 Seminars and learning a lot.

I have been in the Laureates and Leaders program since my sophomore year. L&L has been helpful at clarifying the whole graduate school application process and the implications of being a graduate student. I like the fact that the program focuses on putting things on the table for the students to considerate, more than forcing things in.

What was your most memorable or valuable experience with OME?
When I found out that the office Mac computer was for students to use.

If you had to describe OME with one word, what would it be?
Helpful (in every sense).

What would you want others to know about OME?

That it is open to everyone and has useful and helpful resources. All of their programs and events are well done and they really care about the students.
