MIT Spirit

Kanokwan Tungkitkancharoen has a deep-seated passion for helping those around her.

She has served on the FLI (first-generation, low-income) Leadership Board as an Advocacy Committee Member, Advocacy Committee Chair, and now presently the Executive Director. Under her leadership, the FLI community has convened for monthly community gatherings and has hosted professional development events as well as town halls to advocate for student issues to administration. Additionally, on behalf of the FLI community, she’s been on Associate Dean Search Committees and conducted interviews to help hire new staff members. She has nurtured connections with MIT Senior Leadership,  staff, and other student organizations for joint events and advocacy.

Beyond reaching people at MIT, she also reaches the greater public as a blogger for MIT Admissions. Through her blogs, she hopes to give voice to the “invisible” identity of being a FLI student. She writes about her struggles to find academic opportunities and juggle responsibilities that come with a disadvantaged background. Kanokwan believes in the power of the written word, and is excited to continue uplifting her community.
